How To Give First Aid To A Bad Credit Score
By Jon Arnold
Just like regular people with various physical ailments, your bad may also be ailing and in need of some first aid. The problem is that most put simply put a band aid on their score, which leaves the bad score intact and does not attack the root problem, which can bring your score back to good health with a respectable number.

Your score is calculated by the bureaus, and each of the three major reporting agencies – TransUnion, Equifax, and Experian – will undoubtedly calculate a different score for you. This is because they do not share information between them, and they only have access to the information that is reported to them. Your Visa company probably only reports to one of them, your MasterCard company reports to another one, and that loan you had problems with via the union a few years ago reports to yet a different one. The only references that likely report to all three of them are the "big ticket" items such as your mortgage loan.

As a result, you might have a very healthy score at one agency, and another agency will report a score for you that is overdue for some major surgery. You need to be aware of what your report says about you, because a bad score can be costing you hundreds and even thousands of dollars due to the fact that you will not be getting the best interest rates possible on your cards and loans. Be aware that even a few fractions of a percentage of interest can cost you hundreds of dollars every year on a large loan such as your mortgage.

The very first thing you need to do as soon as possible is to get a copy of your report from each of the three reporting agencies. When you receive it, read each and every word on each of them, looking for errors or things that are not being reported accurately. Studies have shown that the majority of consumer reports contain at least one or more errors. The reporting agencies take no responsibility for these errors, insisting that they don't make the news, they only report it. If you do not dispute these errors when you find them, then the inaccurate information will be reported forever, where the end result is that you may have bad but it is reported as being even worse than it really is because of these errors. In fact, your may not really be as bad as you think it is, or may not be reflective of reality once the errors have been removed.

Next, make it a point to pay each and every bill on time. Keep in mind that if your bill is due on the 10th of the month, you need to mail it by at least the 4th or 5th of the month to make sure the payment is posted to your account by the due date. You may wish to consider using online banking, which is free at many banks, and then you don't even have to invest in a postage stamp to mail the payment.

Next, start a campaign that is

designed to give you a better score. Get a new card like a Visa or MasterCard, even with a low limit, and use it sparingly each month, making sure you pay it off totally at the end of the time, on time. If you cannot get a new card, check into getting a secured card with a Visa or MasterCard logo and do the same thing. In this case, your limit is determined by how much money you have on deposit with the card issuer. Make your payments on time each month, and the subsequent reporting of your prompt payment history will start to override those older entries on your report that showed late payments.

If you cut your finger, you put on a band aid on to allow it to heal. If you need surgery, you get it done so you can be healthy again. Treat your score the same way, and do not just apply a band aid to stop the bleeding, but take steps to make it healthy again.
