When Is A Credit Card Deal Good?
By Paul McDermott
What exactly makes a good card deal good? You probably hear often how someone you know is ecstatic over the card deal she just got and how many rewards she is going to get. Should you rush to get the limited time offer "great deal" she just signed up for?

Let's check what one can term as a good card deal. A card deal is good if it works for you. So, if the card fits into your lifestyle in a way that makes maximum benefits for you, that can be a good card deal.

As you can see, lifestyle differences can mean that the card your friend likes will do you no good, and the associated fees would be a waste of money for you.

This is because the lifestyle and the needs differ from person to person (and that is precisely the reason why every card supplier offers so many different kinds of cards). It might be true in some cases (where the lifestyle of two individuals/friends is similar) that the card deal which is good for one will be good for the other too, however, this is just in a few cases.

Travel and airline cards often give rewards, although they often have fairly high annual fees, and sometimes restrictions on redeeming the rewards that make them inconvenient for what you will pay. I am finding the cost of having one of these cards keeps going up, so make sure you will really benefit from the rewards you can earn.

Then there are the cards for particular stores. Say you shop at Target a lot. You will certainly get told that you can save 10% on your purchase that day if you open an account. It sounds good if you are making a big purchase that day, but do you really need a new card? And if you don't pay off the balance every month, what interest rate will you pay? These types of cards tend to have high interest rates.

A basic card from your local bank or union usually is a good card deal for anyone. You can still often get rewards for purchases, and the interest rate is lower. Don't forget, card companies are very smart. They know what you are likely to do with your new card,

The surprise 0.25 percentage point hike in the base rate by the Bank of England to 4.75% left the majority of borrowers and economists wrong footed, sending UK equities, Gilts and short sterling falling. But with inflation the only focus of the BoE, the question may not be if, but when will rates rise again?

so they set it up so they make the money, not you.

A good card deal is really a relative term and there is no card deal which is equally good for all.
